Trump’s Remarks on Venezuela
During a press conference on Saturday, President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. plans to “run” Venezuela until a “wise” transition of power occurs in the nation.
On Saturday morning, Trump shared that the U.S. military carried out a law enforcement operation in Caracas aimed at detaining Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Later in the day, he emphasized that the U.S. would also focus on revamping Venezuela’s oil industry infrastructure.
“We’re going to manage the country until we can ensure a safe and sensible transition of power,” Trump remarked. He added, “We want to avoid outside involvement. We’ve endured this situation for years.” He stressed the importance of being prudent during this process.
“We desire peace, freedom, and justice for the wonderful people of Venezuela, including many Venezuelans living in the U.S. who wish to return to their homeland,” he continued.
Some Congressional Democrats criticized Trump, alleging that he was attempting an illegal “regime change.” In response, Trump expressed that Venezuela could become “lucrative” if its infrastructure were restored.
“As everyone knows, the Venezuelan oil industry has been in disarray for quite some time. They were operating at a fraction of what was possible,” Trump explained. “We’re planning to involve a substantial American oil company to invest billions to repair the oil infrastructure and benefit our country financially.”
