Trump Discusses Taiwan with Xi Jinping

Former President Donald Trump revealed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that China would refrain from invading Taiwan during his presidency.

This announcement came during an exclusive interview with Fox News on Friday, shortly after a discussion Trump had with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

“You know, there are parallels in the situation with President Xi of China regarding Taiwan. But I don’t think anything will occur while I’m president,” Trump stated on Fox News’ “Special Report.”

Trump continued, explaining that Xi told him, “I will never do that as long as you are president,” to which Trump responded by expressing his gratitude. However, he noted that Xi added, “But I’m very patient, and China is very patient.”

Earlier this summer, Trump and Xi had their first confirmed call since Trump began his second term. Trump mentioned that Xi had reached out to him in April, though he did not confirm whether a call took place then.

China views Taiwan as its own territory and has indicated a willingness to use force if necessary for “reunification” with the self-governing island, a claim that Taiwan firmly rejects.

In a recent statement, the Chinese Embassy in Washington described Taiwan as the “most important and sensitive issue” in US-China relations.

“The US government must respect the Wancina Principles and the three US-China joint communiqués, carefully managing Taiwan-related matters to ensure peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” the Embassy urged.
