Judge in former President Trump’s classified documents case approved for suppressing the names of potential government witnesses in a ruling issued Tuesday.
Special Counsel Jack Smith had asked for the names of potential government witnesses to be suppressed in a motion by Trump’s defense team, saying the witnesses could face intimidation or harassment.
“The special counsel’s request is broad in nature, applying to all potential government witnesses without discrimination, and is another high-profile case in which the court has granted extensive preliminary hearings.” “We request that the identities of all potential prosecution witnesses sought here be sealed, even though they could not be found (in the available records). “We are satisfied that we have presented adequate evidence on the issue,” U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon said in Tuesday’s ruling.
Mr. Cannon then directed Smith to “submit under seal an index containing the names and corresponding pseudonyms/anonymizations of all potential government witnesses for use in the compilation.”
President Trump has used social media posts and speeches to go after judges, their families and others involved in his high-profile cases. He recently targeted the daughter of a judge in a New York hush money case for appearing to be behind a social media account that used a photo illustration of Trump in prison as its profile picture, according to the Associated Press.
“So let me be clear,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, “that the judge’s daughter is allowed to post pictures of her ‘dream’ of putting me in jail, and that the Manhattan prosecutor is You can say whatever you want about me,” he wrote. , judges may violate our laws and our Constitution at any time, but they have not made any attacks against me or in an attempt to destroy my life and prevent me from winning the 2024 presidential election, which I am in favor of. Are you not allowed to talk about crazy people? ”
The Hill has reached out to Trump’s legal team for comment.
