Trump Commended by Native American Group for Supporting Redskins Name

Trump’s Stance on Redskins Name Sparks Reactions

Recently, President Trump expressed that he would have ignored calls to change the name of the Washington Redskins, a viewpoint that resonated with some Native Americans advocating for the team’s original title.

In an interview with a reporter from New Jersey, Trump reiterated his position, stating, “I wouldn’t have changed the name. But it’s them. It doesn’t have the same ring for me.”

His comments were welcomed by Frank Black Cloud, the vice president of the Native American Guardians Association (Naga). He noted that Trump’s words reflect the sentiments expressed by Indigenous groups for years, emphasizing that the former name, Redskins, symbolized “strength, honor, and pride” rather than being a slur.

Black Cloud stated, “President Trump stands with history, truth, and the voice of the American Indians who have been silent for a long time.”

He also remarked, “This is not about nostalgia; it’s about justice.”

Meanwhile, the current owner of the team, Josh Harris, acknowledges the team’s history within the uniform designs but remains resistant to reverting to the Redskins name. In an April interview, he noted, “The commander’s name carries an incredible kind of element in our building.” He emphasized the team’s connection to the military community and expressed enthusiasm for moving forward with the current name.

Although the name change back to Redskins seems unlikely, Trump’s involvement might prompt Harris to reevaluate the decision. It’s worth noting that prior ownership also claimed the original name would never change, so history shows that perspectives can shift among Washington NFL owners.
