Trump commends former opponent DeSantis: ‘You’ll always be my friend’

Trump praises onetime rival DeSantis: 'You'll always be my friend'

During a recent visit to a new immigration detention center in Florida, President Trump expressed appreciation for former rivals, particularly Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R). At a roundtable meeting, Trump stated, “Ron, I would like to thank you personally.”

He added, “You’re my friend, you’re always my friend. We may have a few skirmishes down the line, but I really don’t think so. We seem to share a good bond, and that means a lot to me.” Trump highlighted their longstanding relationship and expressed gratitude for their partnership.

Additionally, Trump acknowledged Florida’s contributions in collaborating with his administration to uphold his immigration policies. “I want to thank Florida for this opportunity and for being a genuine partner,” he noted. “They have worked really well with the federal government, making it a beautiful partnership.”

The facility, referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz” and situated in the Florida Everglades, is designed to hold hundreds of detainees through federally funded initiatives. The Florida Emergency Management Department is responsible for its construction and operation, with plans to add more holding units soon.

This facility is projected to cost approximately $450 million annually, funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Shelter and Services Program, which has been used to accommodate asylum seekers during the previous administration.

In his speech, DeSantis also acknowledged Trump’s military actions against Iran, pointing to recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. “Having served in Iraq, I saw firsthand the toll of Iranian actions on our troops,” he mentioned. “Under Joe Biden, Iran has become a militant regime, actively pursuing nuclear weapons.” He praised Trump for his decisive actions, which he believes diminished Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The relationship between Trump and DeSantis has transformed since the 2024 Republican presidential primary, during which both were relevant contenders for the GOP nomination. Following his withdrawal, DeSantis supported Trump and has since worked on immigration enforcement with the White House, even calling for a special legislative session to advance the President’s agenda earlier this year.

This move sparked some backlash from members of the Florida State Legislature, who argued that DeSantis overstepped his authority. Nonetheless, the recent event drew various political figures, including DeSantis’ supporters and some state legislators.

Although DeSantis cannot pursue a third consecutive term as governor, speculation is growing that his wife, Casey DeSantis, may be considering a run in the future.
