On Tuesday, President Trump criticized India’s military actions against Pakistan in the Kashmir conflict zone, labeling it a “shame” and expressing a desire for the clashes to cease soon.
“That’s unfortunate. I heard about it just as if I was walking through the Oval Office door,” Trump remarked during the swearing-in event for Steve Witkoff, a special envoy in the Middle East.
“I think people had a sense that something might happen, given the history,” Trump added. “These countries have been at odds for a long time, you know? They’ve been fighting for decades, even centuries.”
The Indian government reported engaging multiple targets on the Pakistani side in the Kashmir region. According to the New York Times, this action followed militant incidents in India-controlled Kashmir last month, which resulted in 26 fatalities in Pakistan. India has denied involvement in those attacks.
This recent military action may indicate a potential escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, both of which possess nuclear weapons.
