Trump Suggests Zelensky Could End War with Russia Quickly
On Sunday, former President Donald Trump claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could conclude the ongoing conflict with Russia “almost immediately” if he chose to do so.
Trump made these remarks ahead of his scheduled meeting with Zelensky and various European leaders in Washington, D.C. on Monday. He stated, “Ukrainian President Zelensky can close the war with Russia almost immediately if he wishes. Remember how it started. You can’t get Obama back (12 years ago, no shots and no shots!), and you won’t go to NATO in Ukraine. Nothing will change!”
The upcoming meeting will also include notable figures such as NATO Executive Director Mark Latte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
These European leaders aim to express solidarity with Ukraine during Trump’s discussion with Zelensky.
Before the meeting with Trump, Zelensky met with von der Leyen in Brussels to prioritize military aid, Ukrainian aspirations for EU membership, and to bolster transatlantic solidarity against Russian aggression. Von der Leyen expressed her enthusiasm about joining the discussion in Washington.
Trump referred to the upcoming gathering as “a great honor.”
Zelensky’s Peace Demands Ahead of Meeting with Trump
In light of the significant event, Trump remarked, “Tomorrow is a big day at the White House. There have never been many European leaders at once,” highlighting the unique gathering.
He also commented on the media’s portrayal of his interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, denying claims of suffering a “big defeat” by allowing Putin to hold a summit in the U.S. “In fact, he would have loved to meet in places outside the US, and the fake news knows this,” Trump added.
Furthermore, Trump addressed ongoing crime concerns in the U.S., stating, “These people are sick! They want crime in DC and other blue cities in our country, but don’t worry, I won’t let it happen.” He emphasized the safety of cities and the southern border as key issues.
Focus on Ukraine in Trump’s Agenda
The summit with Putin was prominent on Trump’s agenda, coinciding with his discussion of the Ukrainian conflict. Following the Anchorage meeting with Putin, Trump noted that Russian officials showed a willingness to end the fighting in exchange for significant territorial concessions from Ukraine. He suggested that Ukraine should consider an agreement, stating, “Russia is such a great force and not.”
However, Zelensky and the European leaders have consistently rejected any proposals suggesting the forfeiture of Ukrainian territory to Russia.
Trump comments that Zelenskyy could quickly bring the war with Russia to a close.
