President Trump’s extensive call with Russian President Putin wrapped up on Monday after over two hours of discussion. Russia has stated it isn’t prepared to agree to an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing 39-month conflict with Ukraine, unless the underlying issues that triggered the “crisis” are addressed.
Putin characterized the interaction as “frank and meaningful,” expressing his gratitude for Trump’s willingness to meet in person with both leaders, who approach each other with caution.
According to the 72-year-old Putin, “Russia is willing to collaborate with Kiev on a memorandum regarding future peace agreements, which would encompass ceasefires and conflict resolution principles.” He emphasized the need to identify the most effective path to peace that would cater to all involved parties.
The White House did not immediately release a summary of Trump’s conversation with Putin. Putin also reiterated his unfounded assertion regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, claiming it was an action to protect Russian-speaking individuals from oppression by Kiev.
In a notable development, Ukrainian and Russian officials engaged in discussions in Turkey on Friday for the first time in over three years, even though Putin chose not to participate. Both sides consented to exchange 1,000 prisoners and indicated their intent to reenter negotiations focused on establishing a ceasefire.
