Trump’s Retirement Savings Plan Inspired by Australia
President Donald Trump has indicated that his administration is working on a retirement savings initiative influenced by Australia’s approach. He expressed that this plan could potentially benefit American workers significantly by enhancing their retirement financial standing.
“Today, I mentioned that things are progressing quite positively in Australia,” Trump stated during a Rose Garden event, where he also highlighted a new program called the “Trump Account” aimed at children. “We’re examining it closely; we may refine it a bit and improve upon it, but we’re absolutely committed to it.”
Trump noted that figures like Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick are already in discussions about this proposal, which would align with the children’s investment accounts introduced through the president’s recent tax and spending legislation.
Trump clarified, “It’s not just for kids; this one’s for adults,” emphasizing that his administration plans to engage with Congress to bring this idea to fruition.
The Australian retirement system, according to the Boston College Retirement Research Center, operates primarily through ‘superannuation’, which involves mandatory savings where employers contribute 12% of employees’ wages to a tax-advantaged retirement account, mainly managed by private sectors.
Earlier, in December, Trump had hinted at adopting this Australian model when announcing a hefty $6.25 billion towards the Trump account from Michael and Susan Dell, suggesting that his administration was evaluating options for “working people.”
This latest initiative arrives amid growing concerns among lawmakers regarding the sustainability of Social Security. The Retirement Research Center highlighted that while Australia’s model is well-regarded globally, the U.S. must focus on fortifying Social Security and broadening access to workplace retirement plans to truly enhance retirement security.
“I think it would be fantastic if we could bring this to life,” Trump remarked during a session in the Oval Office.
