It’s amusing how quickly some moments can turn into regrets.
Recently, President Trump reflected on a dinner he had with comedian Bill Maher at the White House back in April. The occasion was part of an event hosted by Kid Rock, and, in a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the dinner as “a total waste of time.”
This declaration came just after he had discussed “regime change” in Iran and the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East. He mused, “Sometimes in life you just waste time! Bill Maher, through a mutual friend, asked me to have dinner, and I said yes.”
The evening, according to Trump, revealed a different side of Maher than he had expected. He recalled how anxious Maher seemed, prompting him to reach for a ‘vodka tonic’ to ease his nerves. “He told me, ‘I’ve never felt like this before. I’m so scared.’ Honestly, it was a bit endearing,” Trump shared.
Despite his criticisms, Trump admitted it was a “great dinner” and described Maher as “very respectful” during his show after their meeting. However, he couldn’t help but notice that Maher’s content remained consistently critical of him, failing to acknowledge any positive achievements like low crime rates or economic highs, which Trump listed in his post.
Trump’s comments were prompted by an interview Maher did, where he addressed the backlash he received for dining with Trump. Maher labeled those who ceased watching his show as “idiots,” arguing that the real question should focus on the content of what he said during that dinner.
He emphasized that had he suddenly shifted his tone in a favorable way towards Trump, he would have faced serious consequences, but that didn’t happen.
On his show, Maher continues to critique Trump regularly. Just last week, he hosted Chris Christie, who mentioned that Republicans often express their criticisms of Trump privately. Maher also made headlines for a recent remark about Billie Eilish’s Grammy speech, accusing her of virtue signaling.
In response, Trump dismissed Maher’s concerns, categorizing him as a “lightweight” suffering from what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He ended with an ironic thanks for drawing attention to what he deemed “a little problem.” It’s all just part of the ongoing back-and-forth between the two.
