Trump Responds to Comey’s Controversial Instagram Post
Former President Donald Trump commented on James Comey’s recent Instagram post, where the former FBI director shared a photo of shells on a beach accompanied by the cryptic message “8647.” Trump stated that Comey “knew exactly what he was doing,” implying that the post carried a threatening connotation.
After facing significant backlash, Comey deleted the post and issued an apology, clarifying that he did not intend to incite violence. However, Trump disagreed, stating in an interview with Bret Baier on Fox News that the implication of assassination was clear and known even to children.
Trump said, “He knew exactly what it meant. If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know what it means, that means assassination.” He added, somewhat dismissively, that while Comey may not have been very capable, he understood the post’s significance. “People like me appreciate what’s happening in our country, and it’s being respected again,” he noted.
Baier reminded Trump that Comey had apologized, indicating he wasn’t advocating for violence. To this, Trump replied, “It’s awful,” and further labeled Comey as a “dirty cop,” referencing Comey’s past actions.
Supporters of Comey argue that he shouldn’t be held accountable for any perceived threats since he explicitly stated no intention of defending violence. Conversely, critics assert that the message was unmistakable and that he should face consequences for the post. Some speculate that it was a marketing strategy leading up to the release of Comey’s new book.
The term “86,” which Comey used, has historical roots—initially meaning to remove items from a menu—yet more recently, it has acquired a darker implication related to violence. Christopher Bedford, a senior political editor, noted that the term dates back to a Manhattan establishment called Chumley’s, where it served as a warning to customers.
Comey expressed regret and stated, “I didn’t realize I was linking those numbers to violence.” He clarified that he opposes violence in any form and regretted posting it. Meanwhile, Homeland Security and FBI officials have indicated they will look further into the matter.
