Trump Criticizes Rep. Cuellar After Pardoning Him
President Donald Trump harshly criticized Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, on Wednesday, labeling him “a loser.” This comment came as Trump expressed disappointment over Cuellar’s decision to stay with the Democratic Party despite receiving a presidential pardon from him.
Last year, Trump pardoned Cuellar and his wife, who were facing accusations related to bribery and money laundering. In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned that he believed Cuellar, who had been “persecuted” by fellow Democrats, might have considered switching to the Republican Party—where he felt Cuellar could be grateful for the pardon that saved him from prison.
Cuellar has been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 2005 and is currently running for re-election. Trump articulated his support for Cuellar’s challenger, Tano Tijerina, expressing hope that Tijerina would win as a form of retribution for Cuellar’s perceived disloyalty. “Henry Cuellar is a LOSER who, right now, should be serving a long-term jail sentence with his wife,” Trump stated in the post.
He praised Tijerina, calling him a “legendary Baseball Star” and encouraged voters to recognize Cuellar’s perceived ungratefulness and disloyalty. Trump took pride in not having made a political deal with Cuellar during the pardon process, believing he had relied on Cuellar’s character, which he later regretted.
As the drama unfolded, Tijerina echoed Trump’s sentiments, asserting that the South Texas community recognized Cuellar’s untruths. He took to X, saying, “Everyone in South Texas knows anything after Hello coming from Henry Cuellar is a lie. President Trump just confirmed that.”
Trump delivered similar remarks about Cuellar at a rally in San Antonio shortly after sharing his views on Truth Social. It’s a curious situation, really, as the interplay between former allies turns into a bitter rivalry with political stakes, adding a complex layer to Cuellar’s upcoming re-election bid.
