Trump Criticizes NATO Allies Over Iran Support

President Donald Trump has expressed strong discontent with NATO allies for their lack of support for the U.S. and Israel in military operations against Iran. He indicated that the U.S. might reconsider its role within the alliance.

During a conference in Miami Beach, organized by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, Trump remarked that “NATO just didn’t exist” when he requested assistance.

“By the way, we are very disappointed in NATO. They did not help us,” he stated.

He specifically mentioned French President Emmanuel Macron, who offered to provide aid after the conflict concluded. Trump dismissed this offer as ineffective, asserting that NATO made a “big mistake” by keeping the two nations from the conflict.

“We spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year defending NATO, and we would always stand by NATO,” Trump said. “But now, based on what they’re doing, I think we don’t need to do that.”

“If they’re not there for us, why are we there for them?” he asked.

His remarks echoed sentiments he shared earlier on Truth Social.

“NATO countries are doing absolutely nothing to help the insane country of Iran,” he wrote. “The United States doesn’t need anything from NATO, but ‘never forget’ this very important moment!”

The perceived lack of support from European allies seems to confirm Trump’s longstanding views.

“I’ve always said NATO is a papier-mâché tiger,” Trump commented at a news conference. “And I’ve always said I’d help NATO, but they’ll never help us.”

Last week, he reiterated on Truth Social: “Without the US, NATO is a paper tiger! They didn’t want to join the fight to stop nuclear Iran.”

At the 2018 NATO summit, Trump warned leaders that if they didn’t increase their defense budgets to 2% of GDP by January, he would “take care of myself.”
