Former President Trump is speaking out against the indictment of Tina Peters, a former election clerk in Colorado, by the state’s Attorney General, Philip Weiser.
In a recent statement, Trump criticized Weiser for focusing on Peters while ignoring serious crimes in the state. “Radical left Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser ignored illegals committing violent crimes like rape and murder in his state, and instead imprisoned Tina Peters, the mother of a 69-year-old gold star who worked to expose and document Democratic election fraud,” he wrote.
He referred to Peters as an “innocent political prisoner” who is facing what he described as cruel and unusual punishment.
The former president labeled her prosecutors as “unjust” and called on the Justice Department to work toward her release. Peters, previously the Mesa County Clerk, has been sentenced to nine years at La Vista Correctional Facility in Pueblo.
Trump further claimed that the indictment is part of a political agenda to suppress dissent, stating, “This is the persecution of communists by radical left-wing Democrats… They will probably be brutally imprisoned, just as the same Democrats who fly to El Salvador try to free MS-13 terrorists.”
“Colorado must end this unjust innocent American imprisonment,” Trump stated. “I’m here instructing the Department of Justice to take all necessary actions to ensure the release of this ‘hostage’ held by Democrats in Colorado prison for political reasons. Free Tina Peters, now!”
Peters was convicted in August on seven counts related to unauthorized access to voting equipment during the 2020 election.
Previously, Trump’s DOJ attempted to secure Peters’ release in March, but federal judges are currently deliberating on whether they have jurisdiction to handle these applications, according to reports.
