Trump Criticizes Senator Cassidy Amid Louisiana Primaries

On Saturday, as voters in Louisiana headed to the polls, President Trump targeted Senator Bill Cassidy, labeling him “disloyal.” This criticism comes as Cassidy faces the possibility of losing his position due to his previous impeachment vote against Trump in 2021.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Cassidy as a “dishonest disaster.” He recalled how Cassidy’s past Senate campaigns revolved around support for him, only for Cassidy to vote for impeachment after winning, calling it a complete “bull’s-eye.” Trump didn’t hold back, labeling Cassidy a “scumbag,” “bad for Louisiana,” and a “terrible man,” even predicting that Cassidy would “get arrested.”

This move was part of Trump’s ongoing efforts to exert control over Republican candidates. However, hours before his scathing remarks, Trump showed support for Cassidy’s work with Representative Julia Letlow.

Last month, Trump had also criticized Cassidy for blocking the nomination of Casey Means as Surgeon General.

In a recent CNN interview, Cassidy, who is facing a runoff against state Treasurer John Fleming, sidestepped questions regarding his impeachment vote related to charges of inciting insurrection. He encouraged people to “live positively” and not dwell on past decisions.

While discussing his campaign, Cassidy mentioned “when I get re-elected,” asserting that he was the one serving Louisiana during his term.

If no candidate secures over 50%, the leading two will compete in a runoff on June 27.

Political analyst Jessica Taylor noted that Cassidy is in a precarious position due to the changes in the primary system, which now requires candidates to run in a closed primary where Trump’s influence is strong, potentially limiting Cassidy’s chances of gaining Democratic votes.
