Trump’s Criticism of Virginia’s Democratic Candidate
In Washington, President Trump expressed his disapproval of Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate for governor in Virginia, highlighting her failure to distance herself from progressive attorney general candidate Jay Jones, who is facing controversy.
The president’s comments followed the emergence of an inappropriate text message sent by Jones back in 2022.
Trump’s frustration was evident as he took to social media, criticizing Spanberger for backing Jones without any clarification or denial regarding his past remarks.
“Jay Jones, the so-called attorney general, has made offensive jokes about serious matters, and it’s unacceptable,” Trump stated. “If they were meant to be humorous, they simply weren’t, and it’s concerning that he wrote about the murder of Republican officials and their families.”
While Spanberger condemned the text message, she notably avoided calling out Jones directly.
Initially, Jones responded to the fallout by expressing remorse for any offense caused but did not apologize specifically for his comments about Attorney General Jason Miyares, whom he accused of spreading rumors. He claimed to have reached out to Todd Gilbert and his wife to express regret for his “serious mistake.”
Trump further criticized Spanberger, labeling her as ineffective for not addressing Jones’s troubling comments. “Even members of her party see this as a reason for resignation from the campaign,” he noted, urging Jones to withdraw from the race immediately.
