Trump declares complete travel ban from 12 nations

Travel Ban Announcement

President Donald Trump has announced a travel ban affecting 12 countries, set to take effect on Monday. In addition, new restrictions will be imposed on seven other nations.

The countries included in the travel ban are Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

Trump stated, “I must act to protect the national security and national interests of the United States and its people.” He reiterated that the travel ban, often referred to as the “Trump travel ban,” aims to safeguard the country from radical Islamic terrorism, a stance supported by the Supreme Court.

The seven nations facing heightened travel restrictions are Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.

This new declaration provides the administration’s rationale supporting the limitations on travel from the listed countries.

Earlier, Trump had voiced intentions to restrict Muslim travel to the U.S., a position he first expressed during the 2016 election. In 2015, he declared, “Donald J. Trump is calling for the complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until representatives of our country can figure out what is going on.”

After he took office, the travel ban was narrowed but persisted in facing criticism for being discriminatory against Islam. It underwent legal challenges until it was ultimately upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018.

Democrats quickly condemned the new travel ban. Virginia Democrat Don Beyer remarked, “Because of his first Muslim ban, this travel ban has always betrayed the ideals and values that have shaped America. Using prejudice to restrict entry does not enhance our safety; instead, it creates division and weakens our global influence.”
