President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will maintain “permanent control over security” in Greenland following an agreement with Denmark.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared that the arrangement with Denmark allows the U.S. to have “complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland.”
He emphasized that, under this agreement, no adversaries of the U.S. could establish bases or make “sensitive investments” in Greenland without prior U.S. approval.
“For over a century, presidents have recognized Greenland’s strategic significance, but NONE were able to take action,” Trump stated. “I am proud to be the president that has permanently and decisively managed this critical issue. This is an ‘Infinite Life’ Agreement, meaning it has no end!”
Trump also mentioned that the U.S. would start to expand its military presence in Greenland, which Greenland will also help develop.
“This agreement is tremendously beneficial for the United States, Denmark, Greenland, and all our Allies,” he wrote. “We anticipate a fantastic collaboration with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland for a bright future regarding this strategically significant land.”
“We will safeguard it vigorously! This is a significant, historic, and special moment for the United States.”
Trump had shown interest in acquiring Greenland during his first term and previously refused to dismiss the idea of using military action to achieve that aim. Later, he proposed tariffs against Denmark and other European nations to enforce the sale of Greenland, which led to some countries deploying troops to the area. Eventually, Trump retracted both the proposed tariffs and the military threat, indicating that discussions would continue.
