Trump Criticizes Biden’s Use of Autopens for Pardons

Former President Donald Trump recently broadened his criticism of President Joe Biden regarding his use of autopens for signing important orders and pardons. During his trip to the UK, Trump claimed that many of Biden’s signed documents were not legitimate, suggesting that Biden lacked awareness about what he was signing through these automated devices.

“It was used illegally. He didn’t issue an order,” Trump stated to reporters.

A senior Biden official has challenged and criticized the methods his team employed for granting amnesty through autopens, according to reports.

While a Biden spokesman did not respond to requests for comment, White House officials previously maintained that Trump personally signs all legally binding documents, although Trump acknowledged using an autopen in his own correspondence.

Meanwhile, Biden’s Chief of Staff has reportedly finalized several high-profile pardons during Biden’s presidency. The New York Times noted that these pardons were under Biden’s consideration, but the ultimate approval came from Chief Jeff Zients, who also oversees the autopen’s use.

Trump’s comments coincide with Zients’s upcoming appearance before the House Oversight Committee to address Biden’s mental acuity, particularly concerning his understanding of the significant orders signed via autopen.

According to the Pew Research Center, Biden has granted a total of 4,245 acts of forgiveness during his time in office.

The use of autopens allows for a machine to physically hold a pen and reproduce a signature, resembling handwritten notes. Unlike stamps or digital prints, autopens can use various types of pens, including ballpoints and permanent markers.
