President Donald Trump has weighed in on the troubling Idaho student murder case, specifically regarding the circumstances surrounding Brian Kohberger’s plea. When Kohberger admitted guilt earlier this month, he didn’t provide any context or reasoning for the tragic crime involving the stabbings of four college students.
“Life sentences can be tough, but they’re certainly preferable to the death penalty. However, I really hope the judge explains why these horrifying murders took place before passing sentence,” Trump expressed. “There’s just no explanation. It’s unsettling, really.”
Trump voiced his astonishment that Kohberger received a plea deal that seemingly didn’t alleviate his risk of facing the death penalty for his crimes. Reports indicate that he’ll likely serve a life term without parole and possibly face an additional ten years of imprisonment while waiving his appeal rights.
Critics have questioned why Kohberger wasn’t required to explain his actions through the plea bargain, and while he may have waived his right to appeal, there’s a legal precedent suggesting that defendants in similar situations might still retain the ability to seek appeal.
“People are shocked he could negotiate without remorse. The judge should definitely make him clarify what happened,” Trump added. “Thanks for handling this issue carefully!”
Kohberger had pled guilty to all charges on July 2, just a couple of months ahead of his trial in Boise, Idaho. During his hearing, he admitted to breaking into a home located at 1122 King Road, where he killed the four students from the University of Idaho.
The victims were identified as 21-year-olds Madison Morgen and Kayley Goncalves, along with 20-year-olds Zana Carnordle and Ethan Chapin. They all lost their lives in the early morning of November 13, 2022. At the time, Kohberger was pursuing a PhD in criminology at Washington State University, which is situated somewhat nearby.
There were discussions about the possibility of the death penalty for Kohberger, especially given Idaho’s recent moves to reinstate firing squads as a method of execution, partly due to challenges around lethal injection protocols.
The families of the victims had differing views on the plea deal, with some gravitating towards the need for closure while others, like the Goncalves family, sought the most severe sentences possible and urged the judge to extract explanations before finalizing any deals.
Court documents indicated that DNA recovered from a knife sheath found at the scene matched Kohberger’s, and cellphone records placed him near the victims’ residence several times prior to the murders. Surveillance video also captured a white Hyundai Elantra, which is linked to him, in the vicinity around that time.
The official ruling for Kohberger is slated for Wednesday morning.
