Trump’s Crime Focus in Blue Cities

President Donald Trump’s emphasis on addressing crime in various U.S. cities is becoming increasingly relevant. There’s a noticeable trend in many urban areas, particularly those governed by Democrats. The situation in Washington, D.C., illustrates that significant reductions in urban crime, which has often succumbed to persistent lawlessness, are attainable—if local leaders are willing to exercise real political courage.

Now, take Chicago, another city suffering from rampant violent crime. Trump’s scrutiny there has compelled local officials to justify their lenient policies while denying the seriousness of crime surging in their neighborhoods.

But before diving into the crime statistics in Chicago and the loose policies contributing to them, let’s briefly reflect on the effects of the crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C.

Since the initiative kicked off on August 7th, Washington has seen an uptick in arrests; meanwhile, murders have plummeted by nearly 60% and violent crime rates dipped by 17%. There was even a remarkable two-week period without a single murder, which, frankly, is quite astonishing.

However, despite this encouraging decrease, there’s still much work to do. This year alone, 106 murders, 984 robberies, and over 3,000 car thefts have been reported—figures that should be unacceptable anywhere, especially in the nation’s capital. A key issue lies in the lenient laws passed by the D.C. City Council, as well as the easy releases granted by local judges, all feeding into a culture of violence. To address these issues, Congress is considering several proposals aimed at reforming D.C.’s criminal justice framework permanently.

Trump, with his real estate investments in Chicago, is acutely aware of the staggering levels of crime in the city. Despite reassurances from Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson, the data paints a grim picture.

For some perspective, between 2003 and 2010, 3,481 American lives were lost in Iraq—an average of 435 per year. In Afghanistan, from 2001 to 2014, 1,833 fatalities occurred, averaging around 141 annually. Yet, in Chicago alone, there have been 5,220 murders from 2017 to 2024, averaging an alarming 652 per year. This is, simply put, a war zone.

Across many progressive cities, retail crime is also skyrocketing, leading to economic losses amounting to billions. There’s a stark contrast in crime rates between affluent and impoverished neighborhoods. Often, wealthier, predominantly white residents seem insulated from the ongoing violence plaguing the less privileged areas. Chicago exemplifies this divide.

Data from the Chicago Police Department reveals that District 3, which includes areas like Hyde Park, has a murder rate of 80.68 per 100,000 residents. In stark contrast, safer neighborhoods like Jefferson Park (1.97), Lincoln Square (2.29), and Uptown (3.27) record far lower rates. Ironically, it’s often the population in these affluent pockets that loudly advocates for increased federal intervention when it suits them.

It’s crucial to note the influence of Kim Fox, the George Soros-backed prosecutor, in Chicago. Since her election in 2017, there has been a marked increase in violent crime. Under her leadership, the city has shifted its handling of crimes like shoplifting, raising thresholds that critics argue trivialize the act and encourage further criminal activity.

In 2019, three years after Fox took office, reports of retail theft had significantly increased city-wide, particularly in high-profile shopping areas. This aligns with concerns voiced by business leaders about policies depicting retail theft as a minor offense.

President Trump’s use of his platform to spotlight the alarming crime rates in Chicago and similar cities comes at a crucial time. It’s no longer sufficient to rely on pleasant slogans about reform or to merely rethink crime policies. The “Soros Rogue Prosecutor” movement and initiatives like the “defund the police” campaign have not achieved their intended goals. Every American deserves to live in a safe environment, and thankfully, there’s a growing public clamor for effective responses to rising crime rates.
