Mamdani’s Rise and Trump’s Response
Former President Donald Trump expressed surprise over the significant backing garnered by Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate for mayor in New York City. This reaction came shortly after Governor Kathy Hochul endorsed Mamdani.
On social media, Trump conveyed his disapproval, commenting that federal funding for major cities might be jeopardized under Mamdani’s leadership. He remarked, “New York Governor Kathy Hochul supported ‘Radical’ communist Zoran Mamdani. This is quite a shocking turn of events, and I believe it’s bad news for New York City.”
Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and member of the state assembly, triumphed over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and several other contenders to secure the Democratic nomination.
Trump’s Nickname for Mamdani
Following Mamdani’s notable win, Trump did not hold back his criticism, labeling him “a 100% communist madman.” He has since labeled Mamdani a communist repeatedly, claiming that if elected in November, the city would slip into communism.
In a recent interview on “Fox and Friends,” Trump referred to Mamdani as “my little communist,” suggesting that a Mamdani victory would lead to reductions in federal assistance to New York City. “I call it like I see it. Washington is likely monitoring this closely. No reason to fund ineffective governance!” the former president stated.
Mamdani’s Platform
Mamdani’s campaign has included ambitious plans, like eliminating fares on the city’s bus system, freezing rent for students, providing free childcare for young children, and establishing government-operated grocery stores. Despite being born in Uganda and possibly becoming the first Muslim mayor of New York City, he firmly denies any association with communism.
Hochul’s support, arriving nearly three months after Mamdani’s primary win, might be crucial in consolidating his position within the party. She emphasized that “New York City deserves a mayor who will stand up to Donald Trump and ensure the city is more affordable for its residents.”
Mamdani took a moment to appreciate Hochul’s backing, indicating it would strengthen their efforts against Trump, improve child meal access, and expand childcare options.
Mamdani’s Polling Lead
The newcomer appears to be leading in recent polls for the Mayoral race, boasting a substantial double-digit advantage over Cuomo and other opponents in various surveys completed last week.
Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, remains far behind in the polls, while incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent, having opted out of the Democratic primary amid low polling results.
Both Sliwa and Adams have affirmed their commitment to staying in the race, despite rumors suggesting otherwise. Recently, Adams’s spokesman refuted claims of his withdrawal, labeling them as unfounded. “Let’s be clear. Reports suggesting Mayor Adams is resigning are completely false. This misinformation is undermining his campaign and addressing concerns raised by his opponents,” Shapiro remarked.
