Trump Cancels Biden’s Environmental Policy on Fuel Economy

President Donald Trump has announced the cancellation of a challenging environmental policy implemented by Joe Biden, effectively reversing the former president’s fuel economy regulations which aimed to encourage the use of electric vehicles.

This back-and-forth on policy feels a bit like a game of ping pong. Biden was the one who had earlier overturned Trump’s initial set of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards, which establish the minimum mileage vehicles must achieve to be sold to consumers.

Since their introduction in 1975, CAFE standards have gone through several revisions, pushing automakers to enhance the efficiency of their vehicles.

During his first term, Trump had rolled back the fuel standards set by Barack Obama, reducing the required annual efficiency increase from five percent to just 1.5 percent.

Biden swiftly countered Trump’s policies, aiming to bolster the production and sale of electric vehicles, which he claims are vital for diminishing carbon emissions and countering climate change—a challenge he refers to as an “existential threat.”

Under Biden’s standards, automakers would have needed to raise the fuel efficiency of passenger cars and light trucks to nearly 50 miles per gallon by 2031, as noted in a report.

Trump has described this standard as costly and impractical, promoting his new policy change as beneficial for both manufacturers and consumers, though the final standards are still pending.

Trump shared his rollback announcement on Truth Social, taking jabs at both Biden and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, declaring:

These new Standards will take the waste out of building cars in America. That means LOWER PRICES, saving families thousands on a new, beautiful, and safe car — Far better than the Environmental Monsters that we were building heretofore. Every Manufacturer, from General Motors to Ford to Stellantis, has called me wanting to build here, and now they can!

He also emphasized that over $100 billion is being invested by manufacturers in American automobile production, promising the return of plants and jobs to the Midwest and the South.

In his 2024 campaign, Trump committed to reversing policies that encouraged the adoption of electric vehicles.

Analysts suggest that less stringent CAFE standards could mean more choices for consumers and higher profits for automakers.

With weaker fuel economy standards, manufacturers can favor the production of pickups and SUVs, which tend to be more profitable due to their larger margins, even though they typically have worse fuel efficiency.

Despite ongoing promotional efforts from environmentalists, electric vehicles still haven’t gained the popularity that advocates had previously anticipated. Many automakers now view them as less appealing, although Tesla continues to enjoy a dedicated customer base, and companies like General Motors still plan to release electric models.
