Trump Dismisses Labor Statistics Commissioner

Donald Trump has dismissed the Labor Statistics Commissioner from her position. In a post on Truth Social, he expressed concerns about the accuracy of job growth figures, stating, “258,000 jobs were reported as significant mistakes over the past two months. A similar situation arose earlier this year, also negatively.” He emphasized the need for transparency in these figures, insisting they must be fair and not skewed for political reasons.

Trump claimed that the jobs data was mishandled by Dr. Erica Mantelfer, the Commissioner appointed by Biden. He specifically criticized the Bureau of Labor Statistics for previously overstating employment growth, mentioning a questionable figure of 818,000 jobs in March 2024, followed by another notably low count of 112,000 just prior to the upcoming presidential elections. “It’s hard to believe all these inaccuracies. The job figures need to be precise,” he stated. He directed his team to replace Mantelfer with someone more capable, asserting the importance of not manipulating crucial statistics for political aims. “McEntarfer reported only 73,000 jobs added, but the numbers don’t align,” he noted, “and even with the Fed’s actions, the economy is thriving under my leadership.” He also commented on interest rates, highlighting recent cuts just before the election.

This event follows significant alterations in BLS job reports over recent months.

According to reports, non-farm payroll growth in July fell short of expectations, while unemployment rates continued to rise. Moreover, Trump has raised tariffs, indicating potential issues in the US labor market. Although employment growth slightly exceeded June’s figures, it remained below anticipated estimates. The Labor Bureau of Statistics reported a seasonally adjusted total of 73,000 for the month, a stark decline from previously reported totals.
