Trump Doubts Maduro Successor’s Viability
On Saturday, President Donald Trump expressed skepticism regarding the prospects of Nobel laureate Maria Colina Machado’s ambitions for a new leadership in Venezuela following the ousting of President Nicolas Maduro.
In a post, President Trump mentioned that a recent law enforcement operation, which led to the arrest of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Floris, was safeguarded by military support in Caracas. During a press briefing later, Trump stated that he hadn’t contacted Machado.
“It’s going to be difficult for her to be our leader,” Trump remarked. “She is not supported or respected in the country. She is a very nice woman, but she is not respected.”
Machado celebrated Maduro’s arrest, highlighting a statement on social media. She proclaimed, “The time for freedom has come! Nicolás Maduro faces international justice for his crimes against Venezuelans and others. The United States enacted this law after he refused to withdraw.”
In her statement, Machado further declared, “Popular sovereignty and national sovereignty now reign. We will free political prisoners, build an exceptional country, and bring our children home. We have fought hard, and it will be worth it.” She announced Edmundo González as the President-elect, positioning him as Commander-in-Chief, urging vigilance for a democratic transition.
At the press conference, Trump noted that the U.S. would “manage” Venezuela until a safe and responsible transition of power takes place. He emphasized, “We want peace, freedom, and justice for the great people of Venezuela, including those from Venezuela now living in the United States who wish to return home.”
Machado dedicated her Peace Prize from 2025 to Trump, signaling gratitude for his support. She stated, “We are on the threshold of victory. Today, more than ever, we look to President Trump, the American people, the peoples of Latin America, and the world’s democracies as key allies in achieving freedom and democracy.” She reiterated her dedication to the suffering Venezuelan populace and to Trump’s unwavering support for their cause.
