Trump doubts Newsom's capability to lead because of his dyslexia

Trump Questions Newsom’s Qualifications

President Donald Trump expressed doubts about California Governor Gavin Newsom’s capability for high office, referencing Newsom’s learning disability. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump addressed the ongoing debate over voter ID requirements, criticizing Newsom and other Democratic officials for their resistance.

“It’s unusual for someone with a low IQ to oppose voter ID,” he remarked, adding, “Gavin Newsom has made it clear he has a learning disability. While I support people facing such challenges, I don’t believe a president should have one.” His tone suggested he thought the idea was, perhaps, somewhat absurd.

In a rather pointed response to a reporter’s inquiry regarding Newsom’s dyslexia diagnosis, a spokesperson for Newsom was notably noncommittal, just saying “hmm.”

Trump also reflected on the governor’s comments made during a book promotion event, where Newsom admitted, “You’ve never seen me read a speech because I can’t read one.” This admission aligns with Newsom’s openness about living with dyslexia, as noted by the International Dyslexia Association. “I haven’t conquered dyslexia. I live with it,” he explained.

During the same Atlanta event, Newsom remarked, “I’m not trying to impress you; I’m just like you. I’m not better than you,” which Trump found problematic.

Furthermore, Trump pointed out the backlash from some quarters regarding Newsom’s statements at an event attended by an audience perceived to be predominantly black, calling it, in his words, potentially “racist.” He criticized those comments as the “worst interview” he had ever witnessed.

In defense of Newsom, his office stated that the criticism he faced was orchestrated by MAGA supporters who previously mocked his dyslexia. “These remarks have been part of his public narrative for years,” said spokesperson Izzy Gurdon. This seems to hint at a deeper conflict, suggesting that the criticisms are less about substance and more about political maneuvering.
