Trump Declares Racing Drivers as Athletes Ahead of Freedom 250 Grand Prix

President Donald Trump has settled the ongoing discussion regarding whether racing drivers qualify as athletes. His announcement came during a showcase for IndyCar vehicles at the White House in anticipation of next month’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix set to take place in Washington, D.C.

Attending the event were prominent figures including IndyCar star Alex Parow, racing team owner Roger Penske, and Transport Secretary Sean Duffy. Trump described the drivers as “outstanding sportsman,” emphasizing their unique talent. “They’re born with something special,” he said, highlighting how few can really master the art of racing.

“These cars are beautiful,” Trump added. “They’ll scream freedom. This will be freedom roaring like never before.” A live pit stop demonstration was also featured during the showcase, creating an energetic atmosphere ahead of the upcoming race.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is scheduled for August 22nd and 23rd, featuring a 1.66-mile track with seven turns.

Trump’s comments surfaced amidst a fierce debate in the racing community about the athleticism of professional drivers. In April, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith sparked controversy when he suggested that driving, notably the feats of legendary driver Richard Petty, shouldn’t be considered an athletic endeavor. His stance was met with rebuttals from NASCAR luminaries Jeff Gordon and Kyle Larson, who defended the physical demands of racing.

Larson even challenged anyone to attempt a lap in a race car and experience the intensity firsthand, suggesting it’s a lot more than simply driving. “You’d feel like you’re going to die,” he stated, underlining the physical and mental challenges faced by race car drivers.
