The election was held as the Republican primary for Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District.
Former Attorney General Derek Schmitt, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, was declared the winner of the Republican primary on Tuesday.
The seat is currently represented by 36-year-old Rep. Jake LaTurner, who announced he would not seek re-election in this election, leaving the seat vacant.

“Derek, an America First patriot and true friend of MAGA, is currently running for Congress and will work tirelessly to grow our economy, secure our border, uphold the rule of law, support our veterans, strengthen our military, defend the Second Amendment which is constantly under attack, and advocate for our great farmers and ranchers,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post endorsing Schmidt. “I fully endorse Derek Schmidt. He will never let you down!”
The primary election featured a number of candidates, including former Department of Health and Human Services officials Jeff Carrs, Michael Ogle, Shawn Tiffany and Chad Young.

The nonpartisan forecasting site Cook Political Report reported that the seat has been “solidly Republican” held for the past 30 years.
