Trump endorses second GOP candidate in primary to replace pro-impeachment congressman

Former President Donald Trump has endorsed a second Republican candidate in Washington’s 4th Congressional District primary to oust Rep. Dan Newhouse, one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in 2021 following the Jan. 6 Capitol protests.

“Tiffany Smiley is a fantastic America First candidate running to represent the great people of Washington’s 4th Congressional District!” Trump said in a Truth Social post ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

“Similarly, Jerrod Sessler, who I’ve supported in the past, will be great and will fight for the same things that Tiffany and I want for this country,” Trump continued. “They’re both running against a fool, Representative Dan Newhouse, who voted to impeach me for absolutely no reason, and who now very much wishes he hadn’t made that decision. There are very few other impeachment committee members left, which is good for America…”

“Mr. Newhouse must resign. The Republican Party needs to unite behind the winner to ensure a great victory in November. Therefore, I give my full support to both Tiffany Smiley and Jerrod Kessler. Both will do a great job and will not disappoint!” he also said.

President Trump described Smiley as a “triage nurse, veterans advocate, Army wife, loving mother and strong supporter of the Make America Great Again movement,” and said she “will be a great warrior in Congress working hard to stop inflation, grow our economy, secure our borders, strengthen our great military and veterans, and protect the Second Amendment, which is constantly under attack.”

“I’m not a Republican,” Newhouse, who is seeking his sixth term in office, told KEPR in May.[s]”After I voted to impeach Trump on Jan. 13, 2021, some people still disagree with me very strongly,” he said, “but I have to tell you, there are a lot of people who come up to me and say, ‘Look, Dan, I might disagree with that one vote, but I support everything else you’re doing, even more than that.’

“That’s a good thing because there are so many problems we face as a nation,” he added.

Smiley told KEPR that month that if elected, he would focus on protecting dams on the lower Snake River, keeping illegal drugs out of the Central Washington area and promoting agriculture.
