Trump Uninvites Canada from Gaza “Board of Peace”
President Donald Trump retracted Canada’s invitation to join his Gaza initiative following a speech by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the World Economic Forum (WEF), which seemed to openly criticize U.S. global leadership.
While Carney didn’t specifically name Trump in his remarks, his comments took aim at the president’s “America First” stance. On Thursday, Trump announced on Truth Social that Canada was no longer welcome in the initiative.
“Dear Prime Minister Carney: Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time,” he stated.
In his nearly 20-minute speech, Carney discussed the shifting geopolitical situation, emphasizing an emerging rivalry among major powers that he believes is unsettling the global order.
“It seems that every day we’re reminded that we live in an era of great power rivalry — that the rules-based order is fading, that the strong can do what they can, and the weak must suffer what they must,” he said. “For decades, countries like Canada prospered under what we called the rules-based international order…”
He went on to suggest that American dominance, while providing some global benefits, no longer functions effectively.
Carney labeled the current system a “rupture, not a transition” and urged “middle powers” to acknowledge the reality of increasing rivalry instead of clinging to the notion of a rules-based order.
He firmly expressed, “We stand with Greenland and Denmark and fully support their unique right to determine Greenland’s future.”
This was a direct counter to Trump’s interests regarding Greenland, an area he had emphasized in his own WEF speech, justifying American claims through military necessity.
Trump also criticized the relationship between Canada and the U.S., stating that Canada benefits significantly from the U.S., referencing the new “Golden Dome,” a missile-defense initiative aimed at protecting North America.
“I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn’t so grateful, but they should be grateful to us. Canada lives because of the United States…” Trump remarked.
In response, Carney took to social media, asserting that “Canada doesn’t ‘live because of the United States.’” He emphasized, “Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”
While in Davos, Trump led the signing ceremony for the Board of Peace’s charter with leaders from various nations. This Board is envisioned to oversee the establishment of a new technocratic government in Gaza, following a U.S.-brokered peace plan that halted the Israel-Hamas conflict in late 2025.
