Former President Trump has widened his lead over President Biden in recent polls following last weekend’s assassination attempt.
investigation Released Thursday A CBS News poll found that 52% of likely voters said they would choose Trump for president, while 47% said they would choose Biden.
Trump’s approval rating has risen from 50 percent in the July 3 survey, while Biden’s has fallen by 1 percentage point.
Biden did well in battleground states but still fell short of Trump: 51% of voters in those states said they would choose Trump, compared with 48% for Biden.
Most respondents said Trump’s response to the assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last Saturday did not affect their vote, but 26% said they were more likely to consider voting for Trump after the shooting, while 7% said they were less likely to consider it.
Biden’s lackluster performance in last month’s debate sparked uncertainty among Democrats about whether he could beat Trump in the election and serve another four years in office if re-elected. In the weeks since the debate, there have been continued calls for him to step aside and let someone else run, specifically Vice President Harris.
The poll showed that with Harris as the nominee, Trump would still have a lead, 51 percent to 48 percent.
a Morning Consult Survey The report released Thursday also found that Trump’s lead continued to grow after the shooting.
The poll found that 46% of respondents said they would vote for Trump, 42% said they would support Biden, 8% said they would vote for another candidate and 5% said they didn’t know.
Independent voters leaned toward Trump, with 38% saying they would support the former president being re-elected, compared with 32% who backed Biden, while 18% said they would vote for another candidate and 12% were undecided.
The CBS News poll was conducted July 16-18 among 2,247 voters and has a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points. The Morning Consult poll was conducted July 15-17 among 9,414 voters and has a margin of error of 1 percentage point.
