Trump Discusses Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions
In a recent announcement, President Trump stated that Iran is actively seeking the right to enrich uranium as it negotiates a new nuclear deal. This comes amid ongoing tensions and discussions regarding the country’s nuclear capabilities.
During a press briefing at the White House, Trump, 78, remarked, “They just want things you can’t.” He indicated that Iran is unwilling to compromise on certain demands, particularly concerning enrichment. “We can’t have a wealth,” he added, hinting at the potential risks involved.
U.S. officials are set to meet with Iranian representatives later this week; however, Trump expressed doubt about the likelihood of a successful agreement, suggesting that the two sides remain far apart.
“I hate to say that because the alternatives are so bad, but they’re not there,” Trump admitted. He mentioned that Iran’s proposed ideas for a deal were “unacceptable.” Still, there’s a glimmer of hope for a new agreement to replace the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which Trump clearly favors.
“They are good negotiators, but they’re tough,” he remarked about Iran’s leadership. He acknowledged the difficulties in the negotiation process: “It may be too difficult at times.” Trump’s aim, he explained, is to forge a deal that could prevent further destruction and loss of life. He recalled expressing this hope to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying, “I told him, and I hope it’s a way to work, but it may not work that way.” Quite an uncertainty there, right?
Meanwhile, last week, reports surfaced that Special Envoy Steve Witkov had proposed to Iran the possibility of allowing 3% enrichment for private purposes. Just hours later, Trump took to social media to clarify that he would not accept any uranium enrichment in a potential agreement.
On Monday, Trump also shared details of his recent conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which they discussed Iran’s involvement in the ongoing conflict involving Hamas. “We are now in the midst of massive negotiations between us, Hamas, Israel, and Iran,” Trump said, hinting at efforts to resolve issues in Gaza and aiming to secure the release of hostages. “We want to take hostages back. That’s all I can tell you,” he concluded, leaving many questions hanging.
