Trump’s Upcoming Meeting with Putin

In Washington, President Trump stated on Wednesday that he doesn’t expect Russian leader Vladimir Putin to convince him to halt the bombings of Ukrainian civilians. Trump warned there would be “serious consequences” if Moscow doesn’t back down after their summit scheduled for Friday.

He noted that the meeting in Alaska would potentially pave the way for a future discussion with Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky, although it’s unlikely the Anchorage Summit will result in a ceasefire.

“I had that conversation with him; many good conversations,” Trump mentioned. “Then I return home only to see news about a rocket hitting a nursing home or an apartment building, and innocent people are dead on the streets.”

He added, “So, after that conversation, I think the answer to whether he’d change things is no.”

This meeting will mark Trump’s first face-to-face encounter with Putin since 2019 and aims to clarify whether the Russian leader is genuinely interested in ending the conflict and making concessions.

Previously, Trump had reported that Putin had expressed a desire to “end the war” in a phone conversation, although he indicated that he did not take those words seriously.

If Putin fails to respond after their talks, Trump indicated he would consider implementing “very serious consequences.” He had previously hinted at the possibility of imposing secondary sanctions on Russia ahead of an August 8 deadline, but talks have since stalled.

According to Ukraine’s UN Human Rights Surveillance Mission, the conflict has resulted in at least 13,883 civilian casualties since it began in February 2022. Russian attacks have targeted cities, including apartments, stores, and hospitals, leading to thousands of deaths.

Zelensky has urged Trump to concentrate on discussions with European leaders before their meeting on Friday, hoping to officially kickstart negotiations to end the war.
