Trump Welcomes John Fetterman to GOP

On Saturday, President Donald Trump referred to Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, as a “great guy,” expressing his desire to have him join the Republican Party. This statement came after a reporter asked Trump, upon his arrival at Joint Base Andrews, whether he had discussed the possibility of Fetterman switching parties.

“I’d love to see it. I think he’s great,” Trump said. He noted that it might be challenging for Fetterman to secure the Democratic nomination, stating, “but I’d love to have him as a Republican.”

Republican Hopes for Fetterman

Trump highlighted Fetterman’s character, calling him a solid individual with “magnificent parents.” He emphasized Fetterman’s intelligence in a way that feels genuine: “He’s smart and all that, but he’s got great common sense.” Trump also suggested that a party switch could be politically advantageous for Fetterman, citing polls that indicated he performs better as a Republican than a Democrat.

Fetterman’s Diverging Path

Fetterman has occasionally deviated from the Democratic Party on significant issues like the Iran war and immigration, even though he generally votes with his party most of the time. Since entering the Senate in 2023, he has voted alongside Senate Democrats approximately 90% of the time, though that rate has dipped to just below 81% in the current session.

His breaks from party lines have stirred speculation about a potential switch to the GOP. Notably, he has employed Republican fundraising platforms and has a close rapport with Senator Katie Britt, a Republican from Alabama. Recently, Fetterman even introduced Senator Dave McCormick, another Republican from Pennsylvania, at a Republican Midterm Convention.

Political Speculations and Mistakes

Amidst this backdrop, Fetterman has also found himself in situations that fuel speculation. For instance, at a recent event, he mistakenly claimed to be a “lifelong Republican” when asked why he didn’t run as an independent. Recognizing his error, he chuckled and said, “I guarantee you that will break through. That will get clipped.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to Fetterman’s office for his comments on this scenario.
