Trump finalizes agreement allowing American investors to take majority control of TikTok

Trump’s TikTok Deal: Majority Control Shift to American Investors

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at transferring majority control of TikTok to U.S. investors.

After a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump mentioned that they had “made progress” on discussions regarding a new deal for TikTok.

During a recent press interaction, a reporter asked Trump if he was confident about the security of TikTok’s algorithm. The President responded affirmatively, stating, “Yeah, I am… It’s owned by Americans, and very sophisticated Americans — and people that love the country.”

In the Oval Office, Trump reaffirmed the good rapport he has with President Xi, expressing hope that the respect is mutual. He noted that they discussed TikTok among other topics, and Xi provided the necessary approvals for the deal.

“A lot of respect for him. Hopefully, he has a lot of respect for me, too. And we talked about TikTok and other things,” Trump added.

The executive order, dubbed “Saving TikTok While Protecting National Security,” allows U.S. investors like Oracle and Silver Lake to gain majority stakes in the platform, while the current owner, ByteDance, retains less than 20% equity. The valuation of the company is set at $14 billion, as noted by Vice President JD Vance.

Oracle will take charge of auditing and retraining TikTok’s recommendation algorithm using U.S. user data, alongside ensuring the platform’s security.

“The fundamental thing that we wanted to accomplish is that we wanted to keep TikTok operating, but we also wanted to make sure that we protected Americans’ data privacy… both because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it’s a legal requirement of the law that was passed last year by Congress,” Vance stated.

Alongside their discussions, Trump and Xi plan to meet face-to-face at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in October. Trump is also scheduled to visit China in 2026, with Xi expected to travel to the U.S. sometime afterward.
