President Donald Trump has given the green light for the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, according to a Pentagon representative.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recommended that Hasan face death by firing squad. This statement was shared on social media by spokesman Sean Parnell, who detailed the recommendation on Monday.
“Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended – and President Donald J. Trump has approved – death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009,” Parnell said. “He killed 13 people and injured 32 others while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attack,” he added.
During his trial in 2013, where he acted as his own lawyer, Hasan acknowledged his role in the shooting, stating, “the evidence will clearly show that I am the shooter,” as noted by a news outlet.
According to reports, he later remarked that the evidence would also demonstrate “that we are imperfect Muslims trying to establish the perfect religion… I apologize for any mistakes I made in this endeavor.”
Parnell also mentioned that the U.S. Army Secretary will determine the timing and location of the execution.
“Judgment day for Hasan has finally come,” he concluded.
This execution will mark the first military execution in the U.S. in over six decades.
