Trump gives Chevron 30 days to stop pumping oil in Venezuela

On Tuesday, the Trump administration halted Chevron's oil production in Venezuela for 30 days.

President Trump overturned a Biden-era license that allowed oil giants to operate in Venezuela despite US sanctions. This is a U-turn from January, where the White House appears to be making progress in Maduro.

The Treasury has given the US-based oil giant an April 3 deadline, raising stakes much faster than the usual six-month wind blowing period.

Chevron's oil production in Venezuela could ultimately remove up to 200,000 barrels a day from the global market, according to Bloomberg.

It is unlikely to have an immediate impact on prices, especially since OPEC decided to promote production this week. It plans to increase 138,000 barrels per day in April.

But Chevron's exit could shrink Venezuela's economy by up to 7.5% this year, according to Finance Observatory, a research group run by the opposition.
