TikTok Ban Deadline Extended by Trump
President Donald Trump has issued an executive order extending the deadline for TikTok to secure a U.S.-based buyer by an additional 90 days.
On Thursday, Trump shared through Truth Social that the new deadline is set for September 17th. This decision comes as TikTok, a video-sharing platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, faces increasing scrutiny.
“I’ve just signed the Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days (September 17, 2025),” Trump noted in his post. “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
In response, TikTok released a statement expressing appreciation for the extension, emphasizing the significance of the platform for over 170 million American users and 7.5 million businesses that rely on its services.
“We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users and 7.5 million US businesses,” the company stated.
Originally, Trump had set a prior deadline of April 5th when he first signed a similar order back in January. Although an earlier extension was granted, that was set to expire on Thursday.
It’s worth noting that the Biden administration had previously pressured ByteDance to divest from TikTok, citing “national security” concerns. This directive was part of the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act” enacted by Biden on April 24, 2024, which prohibited distributing applications deemed under foreign adversary control.
The fears surrounding TikTok revolve around the extensive data it collects from users, raising alarms that this information could potentially be used by the Chinese government against U.S. citizens.
