Trump’s Greenland Strategy Discussed by Foreign Policy Expert

On a recent Sunday, foreign policy strategist Michael Pillsbury shared insights on President Donald Trump’s ongoing interest in Greenland. He suggested that Trump is “still holding back” as part of a broader strategic plan similar to his “Art of the Deal” approach.

Pillsbury remarked, “We’re in the early stages right now,” indicating that while Trump hasn’t revealed specific plans, he is laying the groundwork. This includes potential preparations for military and radar facilities in Greenland, suggesting a focus on future ownership or at least investigation of its resources. He discussed this during an appearance on “Fox & Friends Weekend” with guest host Lucas Tomlinson.

Interestingly, these comments emerge at a time when Trump has threatened Denmark and other European nations with tariffs. The reasoning behind this, according to him, lies in using economic pressure to promote negotiations regarding Greenland’s fate.

Denmark Responds to Tariff Threats

Denmark’s foreign minister acknowledged that Trump’s concerns about threats to green spaces from entities such as China and Russia hold merit. This complexity adds layers to the ongoing dialogue.

Pillsbury underscored Greenland’s strategic importance, highlighting existing U.S. missile defense systems and radar facilities in the area. He brought up the 2009 Greenland Autonomy Act, which could allow for referendums on independence from Denmark if a majority supports it. In his view, this could pave the way for Greenland to define its relationship with the U.S.

“I think in the back of President Trump’s mind he is working toward independence for Greenland,” he noted, implying a desire for Greenland to manage its dealings with the United States according to its own terms.

But he also pointed out the challenges of initiating a campaign or discussions about a referendum, particularly when faced with stern remarks from the Danish prime minister.

Trade Tariffs Set to Impact Multiple Countries

Trump announced plans for tariffs, starting at 10% on various imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, and Finland, escalating to 25% by June 1. He clarified that these tariffs would persist until an agreement on the “full and complete purchase of Greenland” is reached.

In recent weeks, Trump has shifted more of his attention to Greenland, underscoring its significance as the largest non-continental island, strategically positioned in the Arctic. This territory, while semi-autonomous, plays host to vital U.S. military bases and has been increasingly important as Trump emphasizes U.S. security interests internationally.
