Trump hints that Marco Rubio might soon have a new position — president of Cuba.

Washington Update: Rubio’s Potential Future

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is gaining prominence, but there’s speculation he might soon transition to a different role. President Trump has even suggested that Rubio could potentially take on the presidency of Cuba, a place his parents escaped from during the harsh Batista regime in the 1950s.

Trump mentioned, “I think that’s a good thing,” in response to a user’s joke on his Truth Social account about Rubio becoming the leader of Cuba if the current government falls apart.

Rubio has found himself a frequent target of memes due to the demanding tasks assigned to him by President Trump. Presently, he holds multiple roles: Secretary of State, Acting National Security Adviser, and Acting National Archivist. He also served as the head of USAID until last August.

Former National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan remarked last year that it was, well, “ridiculous” to think Rubio could effectively manage both his current role and that of National Security Adviser simultaneously.

On a lighter note, Rubio, who is known to be a sports enthusiast, recently resigned from his gig as the head coach and general manager of the Miami Dolphins—amid a flurry of jokes suggesting he might take on yet another role.

“Normally I don’t respond to online rumors, but I feel the need to clarify. I am not a candidate for the currently vacant head coach and general manager positions with the Miami Dolphins,” Rubio stated in an interview recently. “I must concentrate on global matters and the important archives of the United States.”

President Trump’s comments regarding Rubio stepping into a leadership position in Cuba come at a time when the administration is deliberating on how to approach the Caribbean nation. After a successful operation led to the arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, Rubio expressed concern for the Cuban influence within Venezuela, noting that some guards protecting Maduro were Cuban nationals.

On Sunday, Trump issued a warning to Cuba, stating that no financial or oil support would flow from Venezuela moving forward. He encouraged Havana to negotiate before it’s too late, highlighting Cuba’s reliance on Venezuelan resources over the years.

“Cuba has benefited immensely from Venezuelan oil and funds. In exchange, they offered ‘security services’ to the country’s past leaders,” Trump elaborated. “Now that Venezuela has the backing of the United States, they no longer require protection from past authoritarian regimes.”
