President Trump Upholds Columbus Day and Italian American Heritage

As the federal holiday approaches, President Donald Trump expressed support for the “great Italian American community” while criticizing the vandalism of Christopher Columbus statues that occurred across the U.S., especially during the protests in 2020.

In a post on Truth Social, he emphasized Columbus Day as a point of pride for Italian Americans, paying tribute to the explorer from Genoa.

Trump’s remarks underscored the holiday’s importance to Italian American culture, extending his congratulations to both the Italian American community and Italy.

“HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY TO ALL, particularly our great Italian American Community which was forced to suffer as the Radical Left Dumocrats, Socialists, and Communists rampaged through our cities and towns ripping down almost all of the beautiful statues of Christopher Columbus,” Trump stated. “Well, those days of plunder are over, and the statues are back, more magnificent than ever. This is a big day for our great Italian American Community, and the Country of Italy itself, maybe the biggest. Congratulations!”

Columbus’s 1492 voyage is credited with introducing Western civilization to the Americas, which played a key role in the establishment of the United States. Critics, however, point to the legacy of violence and displacement experienced by Indigenous peoples as central to the discussion. This tension spurred many activist groups and local governments to remove or target Columbus statues, particularly in 2020.

Despite the opposition, President Trump took steps to protect federal monuments and reaffirmed Columbus Day as a significant celebration of American history and culture.
