Trump: ‘I'd like to think that God thinks that I'm going to straighten out our country’

Former President Trump said in a new interview that he thinks God believes he will “fix” the country after surviving an assassination attempt in July.

Fox News host Mark Levin asked former President Trump if he believed more strongly in the existence of God following the assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, during which a gunman opened fire on former President Trump, grazed him by the ear, and killed one attendee and injured two others.

“I think if you believe in God, you believe in God more. But some people say, why? I want to believe that God thinks I'm trying to fix this country,” he said in an interview with Fox News. “Life, Liberty, and Levin.”

“Our country is so sick and broken. Our country is just broken. Maybe that's the reason, I don't know. A lot of people are saying that,” he added.

The former president had previously suggested he thanked God for surviving the attack, and in a new interview he said he was “panicking” when the gunman shot him.

“I think it would be more believable if you spoke to experts like my sons, who are shooting experts, but when you spoke to experts they said there was zero chance of missing from that distance,” he said.

“I think he was in a hurry. I think he was in a hurry because people started saying, 'Look, there's a guy over there with a gun,' and I think he was probably in a hurry,” he continued.

He also praised the Secret Service agents who acted to protect him that day, saying they were “very brave” and on him within “seconds.” He called the sniper who shot and killed the gunman “amazing,” but acknowledged that someone should have been on the roof where the shooter was.

“Obviously, somebody should have been on the roof. And there were some issues. But I have to say, the Secret Service. They were on me, and bullets were flying over us, and not one of them said, 'Oh, I'm not going to do that,'” Trump said.

Since the assassination attempt, the Secret Service has faced intense scrutiny as questions swirl about how a gunman could have targeted the former president. Kimberly Cheatle stepped down as director of the Secret Service after many called for her to step down.
