Trump imposes full tariff on some drones due to national security issues

Trump Signs Tariffs on Imported Drones

On Thursday, President Trump announced new tariffs—which could reach up to 100%—on select imported drones. This move aims to enhance domestic production and tackle prevailing national security issues.

The White House elaborated that this proclamation targets specific drones deemed sensitive for security reasons. For example, drones weighing over 55 pounds, especially those equipped with thermal imaging technology, will face a full 100% tariff. Additionally, both the docking station and essential drone components fall under this hefty tax.

Smaller imported drones will see a 25% tariff, while those coming from countries like the European Union, Japan, and South Korea will incur a 15% fee. Interestingly, drones from the UK will be slightly lower at 10%.

Following a request from the president, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick investigated the security risks associated with imported drones and their parts. Based on the findings, Trump felt compelled to act. He mentioned in a statement that there’s a significant reliance on foreign suppliers for unmanned aerial systems, which, in his view, creates a dangerous dependency.

He pointed out that relying on imported drones could expose the U.S. to risks due to inconsistencies in supply chains and potential cybersecurity issues. Moreover, it appears that certain foreign manufacturers pose safety risks, which seems rather alarming.

The president also noted that in his view, the U.S. currently lacks adequate domestic production capacity for drones and parts, a situation that he believes will only worsen as demand increases. He expressed concerns regarding the country’s ability to produce drones quickly enough to meet national security needs, particularly during crises or conflicts, highlighting the urgency of addressing these tariffs.

Lastly, Trump indicated that “unfair trade practices” have hindered domestic manufacturers from improving their capacities in drone production. The new tariffs will take effect within 21 days, while taxes on less sensitive drones will be imposed after a longer period of 180 days.
