Trump to Raise Global Tariffs to 15%
On Saturday, President Donald Trump announced a hike in global tariffs to 15% following a recent Supreme Court ruling. He expressed his views on Truth Social, stating, “After months of deliberation, based on a thorough review of the absurd tariff decision by the Supreme Court, I, as President, will increase the universal 10% tariff to a legally tested 15% level.”
Trump also mentioned that the administration would explore new tariffs as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance America’s economy. “In the coming months, we will issue legally permissible tariffs that will continue our successful process of making America great again—greater than ever!!!” he added.
On Friday, following a 6-3 ruling that limited his authority to impose significant tariffs, Trump had already signed an order for a 10% tariff on a global scale. This order was issued under Section 122 and is meant to supplement existing tariffs.
The Supreme Court’s ruling to block Trump’s tariffs was seen as a significant test of executive power, which has drawn mixed reactions. Trump described the court’s decision as “deeply disappointing” and expressed embarrassment about some justices’ stances.
Despite the setback, he indicated a desire to seek alternatives to tariffs under emergency powers. The discussion of tariffs continues to shape economic policy debates as the administration looks for ways to maneuver through these recent legal challenges.
