Trump Open to Allowing Ukrainians to Stay in the U.S.

Former President Donald Trump indicated that it’s probable Ukrainians who escaped the conflict with Russia may be permitted to remain in the United States. In a statement from the White House on a Tuesday evening, he responded to a reporter’s inquiry about extending their stay until the war concluded. “I think we’re going to do that, I think so,” Trump remarked.

He further added, “We have a lot of people who have come from Ukraine. We work with them.” This comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding the temporary protective status granted to around 240,000 Ukrainians under a program initially established in April 2022.

Concerns Around Temporary Protect Status

The topic has sparked concerns since Trump took office, particularly after he enacted an enforcement order aiming to “secure our borders.” Shortly afterward, on January 28, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that additional measures would limit incoming Ukrainians under these protections.

However, worries persisted after reports surfaced in March suggesting the former president might consider revoking this protective status, which still technically existed. There was also confusion earlier this year when emails were mistakenly sent to some TPS participants, hinting at revocation of their status, which DHS later clarified was incorrect. Such incidents have highlighted the uncertainty faced by many.

Trump’s New Deadline for Putin

Recently, Trump put a ten-day deadline on Russian President Vladimir Putin to finalize a peace agreement regarding the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. He expressed frustration over the continued violence against Ukrainians. Trump’s ultimatum suggests that failure to reach a deal could possibly lead to secondary sanctions aimed at Russia’s vital oil sector. As of now, neither the White House nor DHS has commented on these latest developments, leaving many questions unanswered about the future of the U4U program and its impact on other Ukrainian citizens amid the ongoing war.
