US Considers Military Action Against Iranian Regime
In recent discussions, President Donald Trump has alluded to reasons for postponing a military strike on Iran amid widespread protests. He mentioned that the Iranian government has stopped the execution of several individuals, which he framed as a positive development.
When questioned about whether he had managed to influence Arab and Israeli leaders to refrain from striking Iran, Trump replied that he had convinced himself of this, pointing out the cancellation of numerous scheduled executions. He echoed similar thoughts on social media, expressing his gratitude that the Iranian leadership had halted over 800 planned hangings.
Trump stated on Truth Social, “I have great respect for the fact that all the hangings that were scheduled to take place yesterday were canceled by the Iranian leadership. Thank you!” His remarks seem consistent with comments made by White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt, who reiterated that all options regarding Iran remain open.
Leavitt emphasized that the President and his team have warned the Iranian regime that if violent actions continue, there will be severe repercussions. She highlighted that a message had been received informing the global community that executions were ceased, and, evidently, the planned 800 hangings had been called off.
However, it remains somewhat ambiguous whether Trump’s mention of the 800 executions refers to those that had just been canceled or if he was indicating that the same number had been halted for a second day in a row.
The White House has not yet responded to inquiries about the actual number of canceled executions or if military action against Iran is entirely off the table. Meanwhile, attempts to contact a representative from Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations for further comments went unanswered.
In December of last year, protests surged in Iran, driven by the country’s economic struggles and the ongoing discussion around its theocratic government. Human Rights Defenders News Agency stated that during recent protests, more than 2,000 individuals, including at least nine children, have lost their lives.
