Lawmakers discuss the “stalemate” in the Russia-Ukraine conflict
Jim Himez, a Democratic representative from Connecticut and a key member of the House Intelligence Committee, is set to appear on Fox News Sunday. He will address Mike Waltz’s new role, shifting from national security advisor to UN ambassador.
In a recent NBC “Meet the Press” interview, President Donald Trump indicated that the U.S. might withdraw from peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia if there is no evident progress. He described an overwhelming “hatred” existing between the two nations during his conversation with host Kristen Welker.
While expressing hope for a peace agreement, Trump made it clear that the U.S. cannot act as a mediator indefinitely. “It seems we are closer to one side, but not so much the other,” he remarked. Trump referred to the staggering loss of life, stating, “Around 5,000 soldiers are dying weekly, and while they’re not American, I want to see this resolved.”
“How much longer will you tolerate the situation before stepping back?” Welker pressed.
Trump responded with, “I mean, there comes a point where you might just say enough is enough.” He elaborated on the deep animosity present, noting that soldiers on both sides have been heavily engaged for three years, suggesting a complicated dynamic at play.
His remarks come after a recent confrontation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where Trump seemed dubious about Putin’s commitment to peace.
Trump took to social media last week to express his concerns, especially after Russian forces targeted civilian areas in Ukraine with missiles. “There was no justification for such attacks. Perhaps he simply doesn’t wish to end the conflict,” Trump stated, hinting at a more robust approach involving stricter measures if necessary.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has voiced skepticism regarding a swift peace agreement, calling it imprudent to pin a specific timeline on U.S. withdrawal from mediation. However, he did acknowledge that the upcoming week is crucial.
A few days later, the White House signed an agreement related to rare earth minerals with Ukraine, which Trump prioritized recently.
