Trump Directs New Census Preparation
President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has instructed the US Department of Commerce to start preparations for a new census. He emphasized that illegal immigrants living in the country should not be included in the final tally.
“I have instructed our Commerce Department to immediately begin work on a new, highly accurate census based on modern facts and figures, using the results and information obtained from the 2024 presidential election,” Trump stated, adding, “People who are illegal in our country are not counted in the census. Thank you for paying attention to this issue.”
This directive fits into Trump’s broader strategy to push Republican states to redraw Congressional district maps, aiming to benefit GOP candidates ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Meanwhile, Texas House Democrats have taken measures to disrupt legislative proceedings. They left Texas on Sunday and relocated to various places, including Illinois, effectively denying a quorum.
The official census website notes that a national census is required every decade by the US Constitution. This information is crucial for determining the number of House of Representatives seats each state receives and plays a significant role in directing hundreds of billions of federal funds to communities across the nation.
“The census tells us who we are and where we are as a nation and helps our community decide where to build everything from schools to supermarkets to homes to hospitals,” remarked the Census Bureau.
