Trump’s International Trip and Ceremony for Charlie Kirk

On Friday, President Trump announced plans to visit Israel and Egypt before returning to Washington, D.C., to posthumously award Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor available.

In the Oval Office, Trump told reporters that he would address the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, and then travel to Cairo as part of his trip celebrating the historic peace agreement reached between Israel and Hamas. He is expected back at the White House for the ceremony on October 14, which would have marked Kirk’s 32nd birthday.

“It’s going to be a quick trip, but I have a couple of important stops to make,” Trump remarked. “Then I’ll get back just in time for Charlie’s event, which they’ll hold in the east room of the White House.”

He plans to arrive in Israel early Monday morning. Reports indicate he will meet with recently freed hostages and address parliament. Under the terms of the peace agreement, Hamas has committed to handing over all hostages, whether living or deceased, within 72 hours starting from Friday night local time.

“They’ve got about 28 bodies… This is really a tragedy,” Trump said. “I’ll be in Israel, speaking to Congress before heading to Egypt.”

In Egypt, an international summit is scheduled in Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday to finalize the peace deal, with over 20 world leaders, including Trump, expected to attend.

“I’m headed to Cairo; I think that’s where we’re going, not where the signing is,” Trump clarified, noting the presence of multiple international leaders.

By Tuesday, Trump plans to return to Washington for a ceremony honoring Kirk, who was tragically assassinated on September 10 during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University.

“I think it’s Tuesday night for Charlie Kirk, my friend, a friend to many,” Trump added.

This ceremony is being described as a “great celebration,” with Trump’s remarks highlighting that Kirk’s widow, Erica, and many others will be there.

“We will award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest honor aside from the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Trump emphasized. “This is a big deal, and Erica will be here, along with many others.”

Last month, Trump announced that he would be bestowing the medal posthumously on Kirk.

“I will be awarding Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom shortly,” he said previously. “While the exact date hasn’t been set, I can confidently say there will be a large crowd at the ceremony.”

On Thursday, Hamas agreed to a peace deal spearheaded by Trump aimed at ending the war in Gaza and facilitating the return of hostages, following the terrorist network’s attacks against Israel on October 7, 2023.
