It’s commendable that President Trump recognizes the absurdity of Vladimir Putin’s 50-day timeline aimed at reaching a peace deal with Ukraine. On Monday, he mentioned to reporters that he would give the Kremlin just another 10 to 12 days for a ceasefire agreement.
Trump noted that this could involve imposing 100% tariffs if Russia doesn’t comply before piling on sanctions within that original 50-day period.
He’s onto something. As we highlighted earlier, his initial deadline set for September 2nd only provided Russia with more opportunities to ramp up their violence.
Putin’s intentions have never leaned toward peace; his ultimate aim has always been to erase Ukraine entirely.
After a one-on-one phone chat with the president, Mad Vlad frequently follows up by unleashing chaos on Ukrainian civilians.
That was evident after Trump’s earlier deadline. Just hours later, Russia targeted a Ukrainian civilian site.
The message was unmistakable: the more leniency you give me, the more I take advantage of it.
Moscow is playing hardball, while Russian officials dismiss Trump’s threats of sanctions as just “theatrical.”
But the Kremlin ought to be anxious; Russia’s economy is teetering.
The nation’s population is dwindling, inflation is soaring, and Putin has funneled at least 40% of the national budget into warfare, all while his citizens struggle to afford basic necessities.
According to Russian Economic Development Minister Maxim Leshshitnikov, the country is bracing for a recession.
Simultaneously, China has backed Russia since the conflict began, purchasing vast amounts of Russian goods, and India continues to import Russian oil.
The looming tariff threats could push these countries to find alternative partnerships, which might deal a significant blow to Moscow.
This rationale fuels the push not only from Trump’s secondary sanctions proposal but also from Senator Lindsey Graham, who advocates for a staggering 500% customs tax on Russian oil buyers.
The reality is, if Putin gets his way, the war won’t conclude until Ukraine is fully under his thumb, resulting in countless more casualties.
Historically, the West has exerted pressure, emphasizing the unsustainability of this conflict for Putin. Trump must act decisively to inflict real consequences on the Russian leader. Now seems to be the time to do just that.
